The Mission of ABCTS

The members of the Association of Black Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeons are committed to lowering mortality rates for cardiovascular disease among African Americans by increasing access to effective treatment modalities, providing training for cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons and promoting the prevention of cardiovascular disease.

About the ABCTS

The ABCTS is the creation of several dedicated cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons who agreed on the need for an organization to promote greater participation by African Americans and other ethnic minorities in the profession of cardio-thoracic surgery. The founders recognized a need to create leadership opportunities for black cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons in the corporate and academic areas. The members of the ABCTS are committed to service and creating opportunities to improve the treatment of cardiovascular and thoracic diseases worldwide.

The ABCTS is incorporated as non-profit organization and is currently pursuing 501(c) 3 tax-exempt status.

Opportunities for Support

Surgeons Abroad
Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons will volunteer to perform surgery in  Africa and the West Indies and teach surgical techniques and the use of the most advanced surgical equipment.

Fellowships in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery
Fellowships will be developed and supported financially to encourage qualified individuals to train in the field of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.  Members of the ABCTS will mentor the fellows to ensure successful outcomes.

Research and Clinical Trials
ABCTS encourages the development of research projects and clinical trials to determine the efficacy of current and developing interventional techniques, with particular attention to ethnic minorities and medically underserved communities.

Undergraduate Summer Scholar Program
ABCTS will pair surgeons with interested undergraduates for a weeklong shadow program. The undergraduate student will spend a week observing surgeries, attending lectures and observing the surgeon in a clinical or academic setting.
